STONYFORD (FOUTS SPRINGS, Mendocino National Forest)
located in central California northwest of Sacramento and west of Chico.
The Off-Highway Motor Vehicle home site has good information on several sites that they manage. The area the farthest north is Prairie City located near Rancho Cordova (Sacramento). Open area in rolling hills. Remember OPEN is the key word, there are not may trees or shade. Very hot and dusty in the summer, but for the Sacramento folks it is the closest place. Going south on Frwy 5 a few hours you can go to Carnegie located near Livermore in the SF Bay area off of the 580 freeway. Access is also available off of the 5 freeway. Very small area, I only go there to break-in an engine, but many people enjoy it for a quick ride. Further south and closer to the coast is Hollister located near Holister (surprised?) near the Monterey Bay area off of the 101 freeway. Nice setting, fun to ride in with a buddy to add competition. Stay out of the lower end when wet, the mud there is like glue!. A little more to the south and on the coast is Pismo Dunes (Oceano Dunes (aka Pismo) ranger maintaned page) located (you guessed it) near Pismo Beach. Fun sand riding if you don't like to travel to Glamis. I have never been there, but I am told that there is a creek (river at times) to cross in the sand that should only be done at low tide. If you get $tuck there i$ alway$ $omebody that will pull you out. $ave your$elf $ome money and be prepared!. Back inland and to the 5 Frwy on top of the Grapevine pass about 30 minutes from LA is Hungry Valley located near Gorman about 1hr south of Bakersfield. Mix of mountain trails and also has sand washes. Take the 'goat trails' to the top of the mountain, good forest riding. Way down south, located about 1hr SE of Palm Springs, is Ocotillo Wells . Lower desert fast riding for all bikes and ATV's. Anza next to Ocotillo Wells area used to be open to Green Sticker (Off Road) vehicles but is now only open to street legal vehicles (Good reason to get a XRL or like bike if you ride there).
