Welcome to the Team Powell website. Team Powell is a dream come true for a group of engineers who want to challenge the desert with their knowledge. After a successful collegiate racing effort in the SAE Mini Baja competition, Doug Powell decided to pursue a higher form of off-road racing. It has been Doug's dream to run the Baja and finish the desert's most famous off-road race. Choosing Class 10, a very competitive class in the off road racing, Doug compared building versus buying a desert race car. The decision was made to buy and upgrade a vehicle to gain more engineering and racing knowledge before someday building a truely awesome vehicle.
Class 10 is an unlimited chassis and unlimited suspension class, with limitations only on the engine size of either 2.0 liters air-cooled or 1.7 liters water-cooled. The Team, comprised of engineers with similar backgrounds and dreams from the Portland area, came together in 1999 to prepare the car for its first race. After three races and good learning experiences the Team now sets its sights on 3 future VORRA races in 2002, constantly upgrading and prepping the car. The picture above was taken during the 2001 Laughlin Desert Challenge, and shows off all of Team Powell's hard work and great design upgrades, some big air too.
