This groovy little pruning saw is a must for, in particular, the shiny trucks in the club fleet. I have often toyed with the idea of
buying a second hand chain saw for that once in 3 year occasion where you happen upon a fallen tree across the track. The difficulty with a chain saw is that they take up a lot of room, need fuel, and if you pick
up a cheap second hand one, it usually won't start when you want it to! This particular pruning saw is manufactured by "Eden Gardener", cost less than NZ$30.00,
and is available from Hardware House. It is a folding model, measuring 260mm when folded, and 460mm with the blade extended. The blade is hence 200mm long. Pruning saw folded
Saw extended
The magical part of the saw is its teeth. These are Japanese designed "triple tooth pull back
action high carbon steel". I'm not sure what all that means, but the proof is definitely in the cutting! The saw is claimed to cut 60% faster than a conventional saw (and it does!). This is
not something that you give your kids to play with. Don't get me wrong, this little beauty won't replace your trusty Husky with a 20" bar, nor will it
cut down 100' pine trees, but it will cope very well with soft wood up to about 4" diameter. However, it does mean that if you are out doing some exploring and that overhanging branch
needs to be removed, you can jump out a have it cut off and cleared away while your mates are all still trying to pull start their saws!
PS. For those who do want do cut down 100' pine trees, I have seen this style of saw available with blade lengths of up to 400mm. The only catch is that they cost as much as a second hand chain saw! |
