TIMBER SALES HALTED IN WHITE MOUNTAIN NATIONAL FOREST
New Hampshire
Due to a possible sighting in 1992 of an Indiana bat,
protected by the Endangered Species Act, all timber harvesting on the
White Mountain National Forest has been halted pending a forest
service study to determine the impact of harvesting on the bat's habitat.

This follows a ban on timber harvesting on the Green Mountain National
Forest and several other forests as well. Meanwhile in the Pacific
Northwest, on 20 million acres of national forest, timber harvesting was
halted temporarily to study the spotted owl 10 years
ago. In spite of studies proving the owl thrives in second growth
forest conditions and is far more numerous than originally thought, timber
harvesting is still banned.

Thousands of timber jobs have already been lost. Communities and families
have been devastated by the loss of jobs, tax revenue,
and other hardships associated with the end to timber harvesting. This
proves that the federal government cannot effectively manage its lands based
on good science. Even so, the government wants more land.

The Conservation and Reinvestment Act would give the bureaucrats millions
more acres, removing these productive forest and range lands from the tax
base, and putting pressure on remaining private land owners to over use
their lands.

There may not be enough time to write. YOU MUST CALL
OR E-MAIL YOUR CONGRESSMEN AND SENATORS TODAY AND TELL THEM TO VOTE
NO ON HR.701 AND S.25. WE DON'T NEED MORE LANDS MISMANAGED BY A BUREAUCRACY THAT
RESPONDS ONLY TO PUBLIC OPINION POLLS AND LAWSUITS, NOT SOUND, PROVEN SCIENCE.
