Pinion Seal Replacement - Gary StanwayDate: Tue, 06 Oct 1998 20:42:49 +0800 As to changing the pinion seal on the jeep its a walk in the park, 1st park the truck with the hand brake hard on, undo the pidlly little bolts that hold the tail shaft on 1/4 AF i think, hang it out of the way you will then need what we Aussies call stilsons " i think you guys might call it a pipe wrench"??? put it on the pinion yoke in such a way as when you undo the pinion nut the stilson hits on the floor pan or chassis then grab a breaker bar (not ratchet) and I think about 13/16 socket and about 3' of 2" water pipe stick the pipe over the breaker bar and pull in a anticlock wise direction "when facing to the back of the truck"with a lot of grunting the nut should come undone..Ha Ha ..keep grunting ,got it ..right undo the nut pull the pinion yoke off of the spline and it'll expose the seal check the new one is defanetly the right one took 3 atempts on my J20s D60 drive a screw driver into it with a hammer and prise it out ..clean the resess up real good ,with the new seal wipe some real good grease onto the lip , the rubber part..gently tap the seal into resess by tapping a litle at a time around the seal .till its driven home ..slide the yoke back over the spline .. 1st check its not got a groove worn in it from the old seal if it is get a speedee sleeve to fit over it ..do the nut up as tight as you can then put the water pipe back on the breaker bar and do it as tight as you can again (with the stilsons on the yoke, jammed on some thing to stop the yoke from turning that is ) and refit the tail shaft, finnally check the diff oil level ..hope this helps ANZAC J20. 258I6 T18 box NP208 trans D44/60 33"-12.5-16.5 meats 3"B/lift |
